Overview of the webinar
End of Life Care (EoLC) refers to health care, not only of a person in the final hours or days of their lives, but more broadly care of all those with a terminal condition that has become advanced, progressive, and incurable. Even when you have written documents, some decisions still might not be clear since the documents may not address every situation you could face.
This presentation will provide a detailed overview of the legal documents that can and do control aspects of End of Life care. Attendees will be provided with an overview of the content and function of Advance Directives, Health Care Proxy, Do Not Resuscitate orders and Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). The presenter will provide an analysis of what health care providers should discuss with their patient when reviewing end-of-life care options and discussing selections to be made for Advance Directives and Health Care Proxies. Additionally, the presenter will review how these documents, when needed, should be considered, utilized and respected when treating patients at the end-of-life.
Any health care provider who works at an End of Life care setting will obtain invaluable clarity as to how to use, interpret and rely upon end-of-life care documents presented to them by their patients or patient’s loved ones. They will also be provided with an understanding of the difference between legal advisory documents and medial orders used at the end-of-life.

The presentation will explain the difference between the practical function of legal documents versus the authority of medical orders (DRN and POLST). Thereafter, the presenter will provide a historical overview of the development of the National POLST initiative as well as the integration of the initiative in specific states, dependent upon the progress of the particular state’s program.
